Hey Hey,

First off, thank you for visiting this page!

As an Long Term Overseas Volunteer Staff with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), from late November 2009 until at least December 2010, I am partnered with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Ghana in West Africa, and I am working with agricultural extension agents and small scale farmers to create positive social change that will improve their livelihoods and help work themselves out of poverty.

From my limited experience in Ghana the previous summer, I understand that development is challenging and complex, it takes time, and there is no "right" answer. We're working on long term, sustainable initiatives; we're working with people at local African development organizations to help them do what they do better (a.k.a. capacity building), and we're learning from and with them while sharing ideas that release the potential. Although our work doesn't always have super tangible results that an infrastructure like a well might achieve, we do believe that it is having sustainable impact on peoples' lives and it is the best way for us to use our resources.

I realize that I have a great responsibility. This placement costs more than $10,000 (training, travel, food/housing stipend, insurance, etc.) which could be used for many other things, but it is going toward me improving my ability to be an effective development worker, to growing as a leader and an agent of social change, to doing the right thing for project beneficiaries, and to helping EWB grow as an organization.

EWB also does a lot of work in Canada that encourages Canadians to become model global citizens and take actions that have positive impact overseas. The Run to End Poverty at the Montreal Marathon in early September helped raise awareness of ways that Canadians could support international development. My friends and family contributed over $1000 and showed amazing support.

I want to encourage more Canadians to join me in this endeavor. Any amount donated is undoubtedly appreciated. This site stays open to provide you with that opportunity so that rural Africans may have the opportunity to also lead lives they value.

Follow my challenges, adventures, learning, growth, and love of living and working in Ghana - a place I have truly grown to love:

EWB's vision: for Canadian youth to become engaged global citizens, committed to fighting poverty. They will be the driving force for pro-development change in Canada.
EWB's vision: for Ghana to have widespread and high quality infrastructure, such as roads, wells and markets. This can be provided by district governments with effective project and data management systems, which are responsive to the rural communities they represent.
EWB's vision: for two million farmers in Northern Ghana to have the means to move beyond subsistence livelihoods; and to have the opportunity to send their female children to school.
